member of an influential committee

WASHINGTON — CEO of Open Doors Dr David Curry was appointed to the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), alongside a former U.S. Congressman Frank R. Wolf and Uyghur lawyer Nury Turkel, which was renewed. USCIRF is an independent, bipartisan federal government entity created by the United States Congress to monitor, analyze, and report on religious freedom abroad.

“In too many countries today, the exercise of the fundamental right to practice one’s faith comes at a terrible price,” said Curry. “People everywhere should have the freedom to worship and peacefully live out their religious beliefs without fear of governments, extremists or cultural pressure. I am honored to serve on this bipartisan commission.

Curry added, “I would also like to commend Congressman Frank Wolf, whose outspoken advocacy for religious freedom over many decades is unparalleled, and Nury Turkel, whose courageous efforts brought to light the genocide perpetrated against the Uyghur community in China. . I look forward to working with them, my fellow Commissioners, and Commission staff to advance religious freedom and further elevate the voices of those who are persecuted for their faith.

USCIRF Commissioners are appointed by the President and/or the leaders of both political parties in the Senate and House of Representatives, and make foreign policy recommendations to the President, Secretary of State, and Congress for the purpose of to deter religious persecution and to promote freedom of religion and belief. .

Former Goodwill Ambassador for International Religious Freedom and Open Doors USA Senior Fellow, Sam Brownback, said, “These dates couldn’t come at a better time. Religious freedom is a right that belongs to everyone, everywhere, all the time, and it is a right constantly under attack. USCIRF plays a key role in reporting to Congress and the administration on violations of religious freedom around the world and in making policy recommendations to address those violations. I look forward to supporting Dr. Curry, Congressman Wolf, Nury Turkel and the other commissioners in any way I can as they carry out their important work.

As CEO of Open Doors, Curry has traveled extensively to areas where Christian freedom is at risk to help those who have been marginalized because of their faith, and to help and bring attention to communities that have been the target of Christian persecution.
