Religious fervor marks Rath Yatra

Visakhapatnam: After the traditional “Chera Pahanra” (cleaning of the chariot) by Lal Saheb Pramod Deo Bhanja, the colorful chariot was pulled by devotees amid kirtan, music and chanting of the Haribols.

Utkal Sanskrutika Samaj, a leading socio-cultural organization for Odias, celebrated the Rath Yatra with gaiety and religious fervor here on Friday.

Deities Lord Jagannath, Devi Subhadra and Lord Balarama were taken on a yatra in an impressive chariot from the main temple in Daspalla Hills to the Gundicha temple in Lawson’s Bay Colony via Children’s Arena, Millennium Petrol Bunk, AU Gate, China Waltair, VUDA Park and Shanti Ashram.

The deities were taken from the sanctum sanctorum to the chariot in a ritual called ‘Pahandi Bije’ by Divisional Director of Railways, Waltair Division, Anup Satpathy, ADRM Manoj Kumar Sahoo among others.

Meanwhile, the Ghanta troupe from Brahmapur provided a visual treat as they performed with the roar of cymbals in the background.

The deities will stay in the Gundicha temple until July 9 and return to the main Bahuda Yatra temple.

On Bahuda Yatra, ‘Anna Prasad’ will be served to around 3,000 devotees in the main temple. Samaj President JK Nayak, among others, took part in the grand celebrations.

Meanwhile, the ISKCON Rath Yatra Temple has been held grandly in Sagar Nagar.
