Northern Christian group accuses Babachir, Dogara of stoking religious feelings over Muslim-Muslim ticket – The Sun Nigeria

A northern-based religious group under the umbrella of the Arewa Coalition for Good Governance has declared the hardline positions of the former federal government secretary; Mr. Lawal Babachir, Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Lawal Dogara and Adamawa Legislator, Senator Ishaku Abbo on the All Progressives Congress issue, APC’s choice of Muslim-Muslim ticket is based on selfish interest.

According to the group, their anger is based on the fact that none of them were chosen as running mates and not on the issue of the Muslim-Muslim ticket as was projected.

“At a time when all key players in the APC are expected to work for the unity and progress of the party in the upcoming general elections in 2023, they have decided to deploy religious sentiments as a weapon of war to discourage Christians from Tinubu/Shettima,” the group applied.

In a press release signed by the leader of the Coalition of Christian Groups for Good Governance, Elder Peter Sati Auta, the group opined that “Nigerians, especially the electorate, are wise enough to know that whipping religious feelings against any candidate is not the solution to the challenges of insecurity; declining economy, insurgency, high unemployment, poor governance and other issues that militate against Nigeria’s progress and development.

While stating that the Holy Bible gave Christians a mandate to pray for leaders, she noted that “everything that comes out of it is not only unwholesome, but backslidden.”

This is why, among several reasons, as Christian leaders of various churches, we have decided to come out and denounce the divisive movement of our brothers to create a religious crack in the regime ahead of the 2023 elections.

“Instead of holding nightly meetings to fight the issue of the Muslim-Muslim ticket, we expected them to expend energy talking about how to contribute their quota to finding solutions to the plethora of problems mentioned above which, over the past 20 years, have served as a cog in the wheel of progress.

While noting in the statement that Babachir and Dogara might be the ones working to overheat the political regime and destroy the same party that gave them a platform of political relevance, pointing out that it is just a selfish interest of exhausted forces , which should be purely and simply rejected”.

The statement further reads: “Everyone knows that former Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and former Governor of Borno, Alhaji Kashim Shettima are not religious fanatics so sooner they know that the idea of whipping religious feelings against will not work.

“It is in the public domain that Tinubu and Shettima helped a good number of Christians during their days as Governors of Lagos and Borno States respectively.

“Where were they, when the heavy smear campaign of being a ‘Religious Bigot’ was muted against Buhari? Of course, some of them backed him to win and were later rewarded with nominations Even with all the unprintable names Buhari called himself, but they worked for him.

The group also asked, “When Babachir and Dogara held public office, when did they speak or work for Christians?

Reacting to what he described as “Senator Abbo’s outburst on the issue of Muslim-Muslim tickets”, he simply said, “We urge Christians to avoid the divisive strategies of Babachir, Dogara and Senator Abbo and to vote for the candidates of their choice, regardless of religion and tribal origins.

“The most important thing for Nigerians now is to come out in elections and elect good leaders on merit; experience and performance records”. The statement added.
